Google Earth Will Map Barrier Reef

Company plans to capture 360 underwater views

Beginning this fall, Google will deploy underwater cameras mounted on submarines to photograph and map the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The project, called the Catlin Seaview Survey, will produce results similar to the “Street View” option on Google Earth, but underwater. Project chief scientist Ove Hoegh-Guldberg said the project will map the reef below 30 meters, where most reef divers rarely go. Researchers hope the project will raise public awareness about the effects of climate change on the reef.
