American Manteo Mitchell broke his leg halfway through the opening leg of a 4x400m qualifying heat, but he kept running and passed the baton, registering a time of 46.1 seconds. “It hurt so bad,” said the 25-year-old. “I’m pretty amazed that I still split 45 seconds on a broken leg.” So is everyone else. The U.S. team finished the race with a time of 2:58.87, qualifying for today’s final. After the race, doctors diagnosed Mitchell with a completely broken left fibula, which will take four to six weeks to heal. The 4×400 team also lost LaShawn Merrit and Jeremy Wariner to injury over the past week.
