A lot of outdoor companies use eco-friendly marketing, so it can be hard to tell who is actually doing good and who’s missing the mark. For Earth Day, we made that easy for you: when you purchase gear from these brands, some of your money directly benefits an organization championing the sustainability of our planet.

BioLite’s grills and fire pits are our go-to essentials for backyard hangs. That’s why we’re stoked that the company is offering an Earth Day promotion on its new CampStove 2 Bundle. BioLite is donating 10 percent of proceeds from the set to Climate Neutral, a nonprofit organization that helps businesses offset their carbon emissions.

Promotion Dates: April 22 only

Almost every component of a Saola shoe is eco-friendly: the brand makes soles from harmful algae, outer materials from recycled canvas and plastic bottles, and insoles from sustainably harvested cork. Saola usually donates 1 percent of all sales to the Mwalua Wildlife Trust Association, a nonprofit which makes sustainable water supplies for wildlife in Kenya, but it’s increasing donations to 50 percent of all sales on its website for Earth Day only.

Thousand

Recipient Organization: 1% for the Planet

Promotion Dates: April 19 to May 17

If you’re a cyclist, you should be wearing protective headgear—but it doesn’t have to look dorky. “Inspired by vintage scooter helmets, the Thousand was designed to look so good that people will actually want to wear it,” our tester wrote. “Not only do I always wear this helmet in town, I look for new reasons to get on my bike.” From April 19 to May 17, the brand is donating $10 from each helmet purchased within its Climate Collection to 1% for the Planet, an international alliance made up of businesses and individual members who contribute at least 1 percent of their annual sales and salaries, respectively, to environmental nonprofits.

Outerknown

Recipient Organization: Ocean Conservancy

Promotion Dates: Ongoing

We’ve been following the eco-conscious apparel company Outerknown since it arrived on the scene in 2015. The brand has been committed to sustainability from the beginning: 90 percent of the fibers used to make its apparel are organic or recycled. The It’s Not OK Hoodie is no exception: the zip-up is manufactured with 45 percent recycled polyester and 55 percent hemp, so it’s both seriously soft and sustainable. Outerknown is donating all profits from this hoodie to the Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit group that lobbies, conducts research, and coordinates cleanups to protect our oceans.
