Our Pick: The Rambler 26-Ounce Vacuum Bottle with Chug Cap. Our gear-obsessed columnist Jakob Schiller loves this bottle for everyday use.
The Trail 2650 won our Gear Guy’s test of the best men’s light hikers. “This pair was so comfortable and capable during both the hike and scree-slide tests that I wore them on a bonus hike,” he wrote. “Credit the cushy midsole, coupled with an OrthoLite insole, the latter of which hugged the bottom of my feet like an old friend.”
Though Outside columnist Andrew Skurka loves the Garmin InReach Mini, the device’s bigger and older brother, the Explorer+, offers a few nice features at the cost of size and weight: a bigger color screen, more efficient button layout, better virtual keyboard, and longer-lasting battery.
“The Beta weighs a hair over a pound, but it’s built from bombproof Gore-Tex Pro (the stuff many high-end ski jackets are made from),” wrote our Gear Guy in his guide to spring rain shells. “[It’s] packed with nice features, like a helmet-compatible hood, and has a roomy fit to facilitate lots of layering.”
Contributor Andrew Skurka tested Zoleo’s Satellite Communicator last year, and liked how it measured up to the competition: “It’s priced, constructed, and engineered well, and it provides a significantly improved messaging experience for both the user and their contacts,” he wrote.
This shoe won a Gear of the Year award in our 2020 Summer Buyer’s Guide. Its “engage-as-needed support system makes for an exceptionally comfortable ride,” wrote our testers. “It’s a great choice for neutral runners whose feet collapse inward when they’re tired and for chronic pronators who’ve had their fill of bulky shoes.”
The Lowdown Slims are senior gear editor Ariella Gintzler’s go-to shades. “A smaller, skinnier version of Smith’s classic Lowdown frame, the Lowdown Slim has the same sporty yet stylish androgynous shape that fits in equally well on a snowfield, singletrack, or sidewalk,” she wrote.
The Flight Futurelight is one of our favorite shells for trail runs in any type of weather. “The Futurelight membrane acts like a nano-sieve: it’s permeable to air but not water, so it’s fully weatherproof and remarkably breathable,” wrote tester Martin Fritz Huber in our 2020 Summer Buyer’s Guide.
