Mammut released a new shell at Outdoor Retailer this year—the Nordwand Advanced HS. The jacket is made from a novel reflective Gore-Tex Pro fabric, currently under exclusive license to Mammut, and weighs a whopping 390 grams, or just under a pound.

That revolutionary fabric is what makes Mammut’s jacket stand out. Hit with a light source—like a car’s headlamps—the entire jacket appears to glow, making this a climber’s or cyclist’s safety dream. The pattern that emerges looks a bit like snakeskin, adding a fun design element to the piece.

Also present are the bomber features we expect from Gore-Tex Pro—abrasion resistance, waterproofing, and body-heat retention. If you do need to vent some steam, there are a pair of two-way pit zips. The cut and gusseting of the Nordwand allows for a full range of arm movement, making it a great choice for climbing and biking. The front zippered pockets are positioned to be compatible with a climbing harness or pack.

Mammut’s shell hits stores March 1, 2019 and will retail for $750. (Interestingly, it’s available only in a women’s version.) We look forward to putting it to the test.
