In the early 80's, an eclectic group of runners in Hawaii became discontent with running marathon distances. Soon, their HURT Ohana (Hawaiian Ultra Running Team) began to grow and organize, and training for the Western States and other races included routinely summiting the 10,000 ft. Haleakala.
